“I don’t feel like doing anything” may sound like simple laziness to some people, but in reality, it could be so much more than that.
Have you ever felt like there’s nothing on Earth you feel like doing? I certainly have!
And it’s very frustrating.
When I feel like this, I usually ask myself “Ok, so what do you want to do? Do you want to [place usually enjoyable activity here]?” and then get even sadder when the answer is no.
This has been me lately.
These past two weeks I’ve been feeling unbearably lazy and unmotivated.
I’m generally glued to my laptop translating, watching an educational video and taking notes, attending a course, checking out other blogs, writing for mine, learning about online businesses… you name it.
For the most part, I have no problem focusing on what I’m doing and getting everything on my to-do list done.
But these days I just couldn’t sit at my desk for more than 10 minutes straight.
I felt sleepy all the time.
And it was like all the tasks I knew I needed to complete disappeared and my mind was left blank.
This is proof that, contrary to what many people say, lack of motivation doesn’t always come from a lack of vision, dreams or goals.
Sometimes we’re just tired.
Sometimes, no matter how much we believe in the power of our dreams and in ourselves, feelings of despair take over.
And I honestly believe this is perfectly natural.
However, while experiencing this, I kept notes of everything I was feeling, read advice on the Internet about how to overcome it and thought about other things I could do to pick myself up.
I took it very seriously because I know that even though it isn’t common for me to feel like this, this isn’t the first time either.
Plus, I know I’m not the only one in the world who’s experiencing this dreadful feeling.
That’s why today I’m writing this post to help you and every other person in the world who has had low days no matter how focused or how much of a visionary they are at the bottom of their hearts.
10 Helpful Things To Do When You Don’t Feel Like Doing Anything
1. Dress the part
The way you dress, especially on days when you feel unmotivated, can have a huge impact on your day.
For me, it’s important to take a shower early in the morning and put on “working” clothes.
Since I work from home, this means leggings and a cute shirt or blouse, but definitely not my PJs.
I’ve realized that wearing the same thing I wore to go to bed makes me want to go to bed again.
2. Count your blessings
On days like these, it’s easy to get sucked up into the negativity black hole.
Practice gratitude journaling: List at least 3 things you’re grateful for. 3. Celebrate your victories (even the small ones)
Likewise, you may start to think you don’t really deserve what you want in life because you’not working for it every single second of the day.
In my case, if I spend a couple of days feeling tired and unable to write anything for my blog, in my head that means I abandoned the project completely and forever.
However, when I take a moment to look back and see how much I’ve worked for it and all the good things I’ve taken out of it, I feel uplifted.
This convinces me I’m just having a couple of bad days. And that’s all!
4. Practice journaling and organize your thoughts
Be honest with yourself and find out why you’re feeling so unmotivated.
This is vital to resolve and get over the issue.
You probably won’t be able to overcome this process if you don’t find out what’s causing it.
And there’s always a reason behind our discomfort.
One of the best ways to find out what’s happening inside of us is through journaling.

Ask yourself simple questions like:
- how do I feel today?
- what do I feel like doing today?
- have I ever felt like this before?
Write down the answers in your journal and remember to be honest.
Then, get a little deeper and start exploring all the possible reasons why you may be feeling this way.
Also, look around you and identify what you like and what you don’t about your environment.
In my experience, when my house’s a mess I tend to feel more overwhelmed and sometimes unmotivated.
5. Practice self-care
Beware of what you think self-care is, though.
Self-care is not eating a whole cake by yourself, binge-watching Netflix for days on end or running away from your problems just because it makes you “feel good.”
Nowadays, self-care has become a huge thing all over the Internet and it comes as no surprise: it’s all about making ourselves a priority in our own lives.
This can be great to recharge batteries and get ready to kick a** again.
However, never confuse self-care with wild self-indulgence!

Look at it this way: self-care is more “parenting yourself” and less “treating yourself”.
Instead of eating pizza all day every day, devote your time to real self-care like:
- developing and following a good morning routine,
- devoting an hour or two a day to learn something new and useful,
- reading non-fiction books that can help you face your challenges.

6. Feed your mind
Read memoirs written by remarkable people you admire or look up to, watch inspirational videos on YouTube or enroll in an online class about an exciting topic you like.
In moments like these is when you need inspiration the most. And there’s nothing better way to do that than knowing the stories of those who have made it while being human and making mistakes, just like you and I.

7. Get good sleep
If you’re feeling extremely tired, your body is absolutely trying to tell you something.
Maybe you’re just that: tired.
On days like these, prioritize high-quality sleep.
Avoid caffeine and sugar at all costs so whenever it’s time to go to bed, your body is ready to relax and rest.
However, it’s extremely important to be aware of your sleeping pattern.
If sleeping is the only thing you feel like doing for too many days in a row, you may be using it unconsciously to avoid reality. And I’m talking from personal experience here.
So, give your body what it needs and get a good and healthy amount of good-quality sleep.
Meditation takes your mind to a peaceful place, thus helping you see your life from a new perspective.
Besides, it helps you increase your awareness, which may help you see clearly what’s going on inside of your mind and why you’ve been feeling like this lately.
You can also try out apps like Headspace.
I know, I know. You don’t feel like doing ANYTHING.
You don’t even feel like talking to people you like, so why on Earth would you bother to get uncomfortable exercising?
Well, in case you haven’t heard, and I’m 98% sure you have, exercise can make you feel happier and increase your energy levels.
Plus, it can help you clear your mind.
On days when I’m feeling anxious, bored, uninterested in life or plain unmotivated to do anything, exercise becomes the lifesaver I hold on to.
Exercise has saved me from anxiety so many times and I have so much faith in it that I take my not wanting to go as a sign that I ABSOLUTELY need to go.
You don’t need to do anything extreme.
Take some dance classes or practice yoga if that’s what you like, but please, don’t skip it!

10. Nurture your body with high-quality food
This one’s particularly important for me because when I’m having a bad day, I just don’t feel like cooking.
I’m a huge fan of Pinterest recipes and I’m always following them or experimenting in the kitchen.
However, when I feel this unmotivated, my mind goes blank and I just can’t think of anything tasty I’d like to make or eat.
But, I know how important it is to give your body its well-deserved fuel.
When bad days strike, look for easy and healthy recipes on Pinterest or YouTube.
Eat your veggies and fruits and don’t forget to drink tons of water.
You’re already feeling low mentally and emotionally, why would you want to feel bad physically as well?
Take care of the only place you have to live in, your body, and it’ll be easier for the rest to follow.
You may believe this feeling is not going to leave your body EVER. Well, don’t be fooled.
Absolutely everything in this world is temporary!
Keep in mind this too shall pass. You got this.
Take care of yourself no matter what.
Plus, remember you don’t have to suffer alone. Talk to a friend or a family member or, if you don’t find anyone around you who could understand, turn to kind strangers on the Internet like the ones you find on Kind Voice.
